COPPA Compliance

What is COPPA?

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a United States federal law designed to help protect children under 13 years of age when they use online services. COPPA gives parents control over what information websites and online services can collect from their children and establishes important safeguards for protecting children's privacy and safety online.

At Microburst Technologies, Inc., we are committed to full compliance with COPPA and take the protection of children's privacy very seriously as part of our broader commitment to safeguarding all users' personal information.

Our Commitment to Privacy Protection

We take the protection of children and all of our users very seriously and have made a concerted effort to protect the privacy of all users through the following measures:

  • Age Verification: Limiting account creation to users who are 13 years of age or older through our signup process that requires birthdate verification
  • Minimal Data Collection: Collecting only the minimum personal data needed to effectively manage a cross country team and ensure runners are assigned to the correct running categories and divisions
  • Secure Team Communications: Keeping communications within the app as much as possible, with messages and interactions visible only to members of the user's team
  • Parent and Guardian Oversight: Providing support for parents, guardians, and family members to join teams as "observers" to help monitor usage of the application and stay involved in their child's athletic activities

For Runners Under 13 Years of Age

If a runner is under the age of 13 and wishes to benefit from team management features, we recommend that a parent or guardian create an account and handle logging runs and managing activities on their behalf. Additionally, team coaches have the ability to log runs and manage activities for younger runners, ensuring they can still participate in team activities while maintaining COPPA compliance.

Data We Collect

For users 13 and older, we collect only the information necessary for team management:

  • Basic account information (name, email, birthdate for age verification)
  • Athletic performance data (running times, distances, race participation)
  • Team membership and role information
  • Communication within team messaging features

We do not collect unnecessary personal information, and we do not share personal data with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

Parent and Guardian Rights

While our platform is designed for users 13 and older, we recognize that parents and guardians play an important role in their children's athletic activities. Parents may:

  • Create observer accounts to monitor their child's team activities
  • Request information about data we collect related to their child's athletic participation
  • Contact us with questions or concerns about privacy practices
  • Manage athletic data on behalf of younger athletes through their own accounts

Our Ongoing Commitment

We continuously review and update our privacy practices to ensure compliance with COPPA and other applicable privacy laws. We are committed to transparency in our data practices and maintain strict internal policies to protect user privacy and security.
