applets not displaying properly

There is a problem with the ushop cart that I have had for a year now. I was told via email about 8 months ago that the problem was due to the pages being authored in frontpage or the browser being microsoft IE5. I then started authoring with Dreamweaver and use netscape 4.7 along with other browsers to de-bug and this problem has not gone away. Now, I just updated to version 3.0 because I felt that this was a problem that should have been corrected.
My site is http://oldgreenriver.com. If you go to the shopping pages they inconsitantly work fine. What I mean is that the applets from time to time scrunch up and cover other applets. I tested my machine and cleared the resources up to over 85% on all tests ran. I used several browsers and tested on multiple machines all over the US only to find the same behavior.
What I would like to know is if there is a KNOWN problem and if anyone else has a workaround. I am very happy with the cart program outside of this but the company I am doing the work for is growing impatient with my progress. I've been working with them for over a year now and they are looking forward to releasing that site for online sales soon.
Any help is greatly appreciated

If you are having a problem with the applets "scrunching" up on some browsers, then try making the WIDTH and HEIGHT parameters of the applets a little larger....that is, give them a little extra room.
Also, if you have the applets in HTML tables, then you may also want to set actual WIDTH of the tables....such as WIDTH=500....as opposed to setting the table width as a percent or not at all.

I will give the second option a shot. I am using tables and percentage at 100, so this may do it. I will follow up with my progress. I also notice that it doesnt matter how many applets are on the page. I can have just one and it will do it from time to time. Is there a known problem? Just curious.

Well, I tried everything and no resolution. I dont understand WHY it is ONLY with INTERNET EXPLORER but it brings back a memory where I placed a "this site is optimized with NETSCAPE", due to a email from this company telling me that IE had its problems with JAVA.
I do not like the fact that I know someone there is knowledgable of this issue and not addressing it specifically. I know there is a KNOWN issue with this and it is really difficult describing this to my client. I mean, how would you tell someone that "as long as the potential client is not using IE your shopping system will work"? There is no way to tell them that. However, it would make more sense to tell them a REASON IE is not handling the applet properly and give a work-around.
I feel like I've been sent on a wild goose-chase with defining tables.

BTW... Even on your sites example store the applets do the same thing in regards to IE. I really think someone should look into this further to develop a work-around. Now, it is not just on my machine either. I have clients in New Jersey, California, New Mexico, North Carolina and Michigan that viewed the same thing ONLY with Internet Explorer.

No, we are not hearing other complaints of the applets "scrunching" up (as you can see in this forum). But I can tell you that any such problems that you are experiencing would be related to the tables...inside of tables... inside of tables... that you are using on your site at:
From looking at that page, it doesn't look like you tried setting the WIDTH of any of your tables to an actual pixel WIDTH yet... but when you do, be sure to specify the WIDTH of the ACTUAL TABLE CELL THAT THE APPLET IS IN.
In regard to seeing the applet(s) on our site "scrunching" up, on what page are you referring to? Give me the exact URL of the page on our site and I will take a look at it.

Go here
Reload the page several times and observe the applets
This is a page I made just for you. A master table that is DEFINED TO 752 in width and a table within holding the applets from my baseball.htm that is DEFINED TO 630 in width. Now, why is there a problem with IE ONLY. I do not know how to make it any simpler to diagnose and if I am doing anything wrong here, please let me know.
If you would like to discuss this with me please feel free to call 901-565-0970
Thanks so much!

I just went to your test page at:
..using IE 5 and reloaded you page 10 times in a row... I also tried resizing the browser window between changes... and it all work totally fine for me. But if you say you are experiencing a "scrunching" problem with that page... then I'll believe you.... And therefore suggest specifying the WIDTH on the actual table cell that holds the applet.
That is, specify the WIDTH on your "td" line that is directly above your applet line.
That is, change the "td" line immediately before your applet definition from:
to something like:
td align="right" width="550"
And that should mimize any "scrunching" problem that you are seeing.

Thanks very much for helping me out here. It seems to be doing the trick and I cannot begin to express my appreciation for your help. Please excuse any comments that I may have made that should have been made after my "chill" pill.

Hate to seem like a sore subject but it did not work. All of the tables/cells are defined on the site. I have spent several hours ensuring this and it did not do the trick. If you would view the source of this page http://oldgreenriver.com/store/html_category1/jackets.htm if you load this thing in IE5 or better you will see what I am talking about here.
(make sure you are using INTERNET EXPLORER, NETSCAPE is fine. Load the page several times and page to the bottom and top each time you load it.)
I set the values of width in every way possible. I used them as big as 640 and as small as 550. I tried applet sizes from 500 to 640 with the same result. Now the page should show the cell width at 550 and the applet at 500 heigth is 37 for the cell and 34 for the applet but keep in mind that I tried several possibilities. This ONLY happens with Internet Explorer and remember, I reported this back in the 2.0 days. Any further assistance is greatly appreciated.

I visited your site again at:
...with IE 5.0, and again everything seemed to work fine even after reloading/resizing several times. But again, I'll believe you if you say you are having a problem with the applets "scrunching" up.
I took a look at your source code and see that you put a WIDTH=600 on most of your cells with applets...which is good... however, you also put a WIDTH=640 on the tables too... and with one cell in the table... I'm not sure what the browser would do with that extra 40. Futhermore, you have so many tables on that page... with various width settings... I can't follow it through entirely to make sure the table widths/columns all correspond.
Since that test page you made the other day seemed to work fine for you....my only suggestion would be that it may be worth your time to try cleaning up/reducing the tables in your "jackets.htm" page as best as possible.

I am very sorry for seeminly waisting time here. I did a complete backup of my files on my computer and formated the hard-drive, reinstalled the os and IE5. I cannot get it to scrunch so I think it is on the client side. I really appreciate all of your help and I am going to resize those tables to make them more user friendly. Thanks,

Wow! I didn't mean for you to have to do that....But I am glad it's working for you now. Reducing/resizing those tables may still be a good idea anyway in order to minimize any such problems your customers are having.
