Calling All Programmers Who Use uShop
Author Brian Levine on 08-29-2002 at 09:34 (EST)
I currently manage my uShop based website with a system that I wrote in Microsoft Access using an ODBC connection to a MySQL database. The system handles ordering, inventory control, invoicing, vendor and customer information and creating/maintaining web catalog pages. The pages themselves use PHP in order to access inventory data for the website, and there are modifications to the uShop perl code in order to capture invoice information to the database.

I'm beginning the process of rewriting this in Visual Basic in order to create a true client-server system, where all data is kept on the server. I thought that this might be a good "community" project, assuming that I could get other programmers willing to work on this. I'd really like to do this as "Freeware" (i.e. free to anyone). I'd also like to rework this so that it could work with any server-side database, and generate either PHP or ASP as the scripting language for the web pages, so that both UNIX and NT servers would be supported.

If this sounds interesting to you, email me at The project will require programmers, maybe a DBA, documentors and testers. The reward will be nothing, well, expect for same great experience with cool web technologies and hopefully, a great management system to work with uShop.

P.S. - Please don't email with "can I get a copy of the final product" requests. We'll let everyone know if and when its ready.

Sounds interesting. Good luck with the project.

Well, the response has been "whelming"...

I know you're out there, so I'm putting up some links to screen shots. The project is actually coming along pretty good, though I really don't want to do this by myself. Email me for links to the screenshots.

Okay, I've decided to drop back and go with a totally server-side application, written in PHP. The reason for this is that there still seems to be some issues with the ODBC Connector ofr MySQL, which seems to be problematic at best, and broken at worst.

In any case, I've shifted to a PHP implementation. Right now I am doing the Inventory system, then I will do the Customer and Invoicing systems.

Anyone interested in helping can feel free to drop me a line. It would also be nice to convert the finished product from PHP to ASP.

Well, I have to say this. Not only is keeping the application at the server MUCH faster, its a heck of a lot more reliable. I'm getting none of the flakey errors that I was getting using MySQL and ODBC.

Inventory system is done. Customer system is 75% done. Invoicing will probably be a bit trickier.
