NT Permissions

What exactly does Orders Directory have to execute? I use an NT server; my host will set up Write OR Execute permissions on the directory, but NOT Both. As a result (I believe) Orders are not being written to Orders Directory. Instead, I get the standard File Error message "Unable to Open ..." Directory has Write permission. Any suggestions?

There are several reasons that you might get that error message. Have you looked at our cgi script troubleshooting info at:

Specifically the NT information.

I have pored through the info and double checked all settings and paths. I will continue to do so until I find the problem. BUT ...
My basic question is - Is it necessary to have the Orders directory set to Execute AND Write or will it work just with Write permission?
If it requires both, I am wasting my time trying to find another problem that may or may not exist.

Often on UNIX servers the directory must be set to execute in order to be able to list the contents of the directory. As for NT servers, go with READ/WRITE.

Basically, the script needs permission to READ and WRITE files to that directory.

In regard to your "unable to open..." error, take a look in your orders directory and see if new order files are being created in that directory. That is, whenever an order is placed, a new order file will be created in that directory. If not, then the problem will be either that 1) the directory does not have WRITE permission and/or 2) the path that you have configured to your "orders" directory is incorrect. (try using the full directory path to that directory if you have any doubt).

If order files are being written to your orders directory, but you still get the unable to open error, then the problem is that the script does not have permission to read from that directory.

Again refer to this our troubleshooting link for additional assistence for that problem:

Also, whatever the final solution/permissions you set on that "orders" directory, just be sure that regular website visitors cannot list the contents of your "orders" directory. See

for more info on that.
