One of the most unique features of uTestTM is that you can use
it to put interactive tests online and on CD-ROM! That is, because
the uTestTM Applets run locally on the user's browser and do not
require any interaction with a web server, uTestTM is ideal for
creating Interactive CD-ROM Tests. By simply putting your uTestTM
HTML pages on CD-ROM, user's will be able to run your tests directly from
the CD-ROM.... without ever having a connection to the internet!
Why Put Your Tests On CD-ROM?
Some of the benefits of putting interactive tests on CD-ROM include:
- Users do not need any connection to the internet. This is ideal
for laptop users, business travelors, or use anywhere internet connections
are too costly/not feasible.
- Tests and up to 700 Megabytes of information/multimedia can be
easily distributed via mail or within training books.
- Tests can utilize large multimedia files (graphics, sounds, movies, etc.)
without any significant download time.... since all files are contained locally
on the CD-ROM.
- You'll be on the cutting edge of testing/training technology!
How Do You Put Your Tests On CD-ROM?
The process of putting your interactive test on CD-ROM involves simply transferring
your test's HTML pages and directory structure onto the CD-ROM. The user can then
use his/her web browser to open the HTML pages from the CD-ROM... and the test will
function just as it did on your local desktop computer and/or server.
Below are some tips to following when putting a test on CD-ROM:
- When developing your HTML pages, be sure to use only relative directory
paths when linking to other pages/images. That is, don't refer to test
pages/images via full directory paths (such as "C:/mytest/images/logo.gif") nor
full URLs (such as "http://www.mydomain.com/images/logo.gif"). Instead make
all paths relative (such as "../images/logo.gif").
- Before mass producing any CD-ROM tests, be sure to test them out! Test
it out on various browsers and platforms to make sure it works as desired on the
browsers/platforms that you intend to support.
- When developing your HTML pages, don't be afraid to take advantage of the
fact that the download time of graphics and other multimedia will be negligable
since it will all be contained locally on the CD-ROM. So use whatever graphics,
movies, sounds and other multimedia that will enhance the testing experience.
- Don't forget about advertizing. Just as you can sell banners adds on a
website, you may be able get sponsors/sell advertizing space on your
"state-of-the-art training CD"... in order to help offset the costs of mass
producing the CDs.
