A few of our customers report that the drop down box to choose a State doesn't work. This has only happened about 4 times. Some of them say it will only go about half way and some can't drop it down at all. I have never been able to duplicate the problem with either IE 5.0 or Netscape 4.6. I asked the last customer what he was using and he is on a Mac G4 using the latest version of netscape. Any suggestions? The orders get placed ok and all the other fields are fine. They just usually put their state in the comment field.

That is interesting....and also the first note of a problem with Netscape on a Mac. Do you have any input applets in your store that have option lists?....If so, then they would probably be having the same problem. Also, do you know what exact version of Netscape they are using? (4.6, 4.7, 6.0, etc)?
In any case, we are in the process of attempting to do some controlled testing on the Mac platform. If anyone has a Mac computer and would like to volunteer to help do some controlled testing on the Mac platform, email us at "email@example.com" with "Mac Volunteer" in the subject.

I should have included this with the first post, here is what the customer told me:
I am running Netscape Navigator version 4.7. I have a G3 Power
Macintosh computer that I am running the program on. I am also using
a slip/PPP connection. I tried to reload the document but I was still
unable to have the state appear.
We do have other pages which have drop down boxes. I will see if the customer will be willing to perform a few test for us as we do not have any Macs.

I asked the customer to try the cart again and to see if it was just the State or other items that didn't work. I also asked him to try the Excess Solutions site which has an almost identical order page. Here was his answer:
I looked into the information you required. On the alltronics site
the state and tax rate still do not show up. They appear as just x's
also the Country and the expiration date are what appear half cut off
when you view the box. You can still scroll down and find things but
when just viewing the box it is half cut off. On the excess site that
you spoke of the state drop down bar still works but the tax rate does
not. Also the country and expiration date behave as mentioned above.
The url to both site are

Thanks for the info. It sounds like the Java layout manager on Mac/Netscape is adjusting the width of the "state" and "tax" menus based on the first element in the list....which in your case is a white space for the "state" and a white space for the "tax". You can't adjust the "tax" menu from not having a space as the first element, but you can correct the "state"....since you currently have the first element of your "states" parameter set to a space as in:
NAME=states VALUE=" ,AK,AL,AR,....
Probably what needs to be done is to put longest element as the first element in the menu....just to make sure the Java layout manager adjusts the width of the component to be wide enough.
To make the "state" field wider, maybe try removing that first space from your "states" parameter:
And since the customer mentioned that the first "country" appeared fine, but the others were cut off, maybe just put a longer value in as the first country. Perhaps something like:
PARAM NAME=countries VALUE="PLEASE SELECT YOUR COUNTRY,UNITED STATES,CANADA,....
Anyway, thanks again for the info. In uShop 3.0, it will probably be a mute point anyway, since the entire order process has been changed. That is, in uShop 3.0, the order forms are just standard HTML....no Java....so that should eliminate such problems. (Plus it will allow you to customize the looks of the order forms however you like). FYI: No "official" release date of uShop 3.0 has been set at this time.

Thanks for the tip I will try it. We had another one today and I think this confirms that it is a problem only with Macs running Netscape. Here is what I ask the customer and his reply along with some nice comments:
Hi, I am a consultant for Alltronics and see you had a problem with the State drop down box on the order form.
This only rarely happens and we are trying to narrow down the problem. Could you please provide us with the operating system you are using,
Mac OS 8.5
the browser you are using including the version number
and a general description of your computer.
Power PC 6100 66 w/40 mB installed ram.
Also, did you have a problem with any other drop down box such as the Country or Credit Card Type.
No, only the sales tax rate and state.
We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your time.
No Problem. It did not interfere with completing the order. This was actually one of the best sites I have used to place an order over the net. I really like having the shopping cart update without having to go through 2 or 3 page reloads.
The only thing that would make it better would be the ability to add an item by direct catalog number entry.
Keep up the good programming.
