Search by City, State & Zip
Author Denny on 06-17-2002 at 12:18 (EST)
Is it possible for the Business version to allow a user to search by city, state or ZIP? I see more search capabilities in the Duluxe version but we only need a simple address search.

I am trying to have a "Locate a Store near you" page.
We want the visitor to be able to find a store near them and be able to search by those three things. They wouldn't know the store name or contact information.
So we really don't need all the extras of the Deluxe version.

Is it also possible to have the pages be states or have categories be states instead?

We have all the listings, so it we really don't need to have the stores add or edit their listings. I have installed the free version and am looking at which version to buy to get the job done for this small company.

Thanks,

In regard to searching by city, state or zip code in the Business version... currently, there are two search options in the Business Edition of uDirectory:

1) A search by "business name".... which will perform the search based on the "business name" field.

and

2) A search by "keyword".... which will perform the search based on the "description" field.

If you want to search by something like "City", for example, that would require modifying the script.

Here are some instructions to change the "Keyword" search to a "City" search:

STEP 1: Make a backup of your current "udirectory_business.pl" script... just in case.

STEP 2: Open your "udirectory_business.pl" script with any text editor such as WordPad.

STEP 3: Do a search on the text "By Keyword" and replace the text with "By City".

NOTE: There will be TWO instances of "By Keyword" to change.

STEP 4: Do a search on the following line:

if ($line =~ " < description > ")

And change it to:

if ($line =~ " < city > ")

NOTE: In the above lines, this forum will probably display the less-than ( < ) and greater-than ( > ) signs with a space on each side of the symbol. When doing your search and replace, do NOT put spaces around those less-than and greater-than signs.

STEP 5: Save the script... as TEXT if your editor asks... and try it out!

In regard to the second part of your question, having the categories correspond to "States"... yes, you can do that. Just be sure that when adding your categories, give them each a name corresponding to a state.

Following up on the question Denny asked. We don't need the ability to search by business but rather by city, state or zip also but we DO want to keep the ability to search by Keyword. All we would need to change is the "Keyword Business" to State is this correct?

Thanks - Marie

In regard to changing the search "By Business" in the Business Edition of uDirectory to seach "By State", here are some instructions on how to modify the script:

STEP 1: Make a backup of your current "udirectory_business.pl" script... just in case.

STEP 2: Open your "udirectory_business.pl" script with any text editor such as WordPad.

STEP 3: Do a search on the text "By Business" and replace the text with "By State".

NOTE: There will be TWO instances of "By Business" to change.

STEP 4: Do a search on the following line:

if ($keyword_search == 1)

About 12 lines down from there you will see the following line:

if ($line =~ " < business > ")

STEP 5: Change the line:

if ($line =~ " < business > ")

to

if ($line =~ " < state > ")

STEP 6: Save the script... as TEXT if your editor asks... and try it out!
