.pl script will not work
Author Melinda Odom on 03-09-2000 at 12:46 (EST)
I have put this ushop_cgiscript.pl in my cgi-bin directory with the permissions set to 755.

The server is a unix with 5.0? for perl and handles both .cgi and .pl scripts.

When testing it as per your instructions it tried to open up instead of giving the the message.

I tried changing it to ushop_cgiscript.cgi and then it opened up in the browser so I could read the script.

No matter what I try I do not get your page as your cgiscript instructions say.

How do I do this? I cannot proceed if I cannot get this to work.

Sincerely,
Melinda

Melinda,

Usually this problem is caused by one of the following:
Wrong extension on the file (you checked this),
The folder does is not configured to execute scripts (work with your host to verify), or the file itself does not have the proper permissions.

If you want a simple script to verify server settings you might try installing the very basic Perl script described at:

http://www.uburst.com/uStorekeeper/testscript.html

This is actually a reference page we refer our uStorekeeper users to. uStorekeeper is just another one of our products...but the concept is the same. That is, some servers have some special things that need to be done to make Perl scripts execute properly....and this very short exercise will help you to get familiar with installing/executing Perl scripts on your server.

Dear Charlie,

The test script did the same thing. I tried that yesterday.

Should I put this script in the root with my other files?

Melinda,

You should get with your tech support (of your host) and verify your settings. It sounds like the folder does not have execute permissions or the permissions are set incorrectly. That sample script is as simple as you can get and would indicate that there is a setting incorrect on the server.

Don't move the script into your other folder because for sure it won't have the permissions set to run scripts.
