Shipping for specific items - Preread order applet
Author David Levy on 02-07-2000 at 14:58 (EST)
I would like to quote another persons post. I feel this is a very important feature to add because I now find myself in this situation with no solution.
Also, it would be nice if there were some kind of pointer to the order applet. This way when the visitor goes to the View Cart page they get the shipping information as well. Like perhaps a parameter in the Large cart applet specifying where the order applet is, read it, then load the shipping info.

Here's that quote. Please implement it, because I needed it yesterday.

"There should be an extra field in with each item entry to specify specific shipping charge for this item. Say, if I'm selling a computer that may well be only 5 pounds (or whatever) but I want to charge a ton for shipping because I insure the item....
This is a simple addition that really should be made to improve the software. I sell a lot of random items and shipping is not determined by price, weight, or quantity. If I could say "Charge $20 flat shipping for this item" and "Charge $1 flat shipping for this other item" it'd be great!"

David,

uShop is very flexible in it's shipping options. You can almost always figure a way to get the shipping charges the way you want them. I'm unclear as to why if you shipped by weight on a computer you couldn't just change the weight to charge the shipping charge that you want. The fact that you don't want to charge by weight, quantity, or prices doesn't mean you can't use these to get the charges that you want. I'll pass your suggestion on to our developer.

Yes, I will admit that uShop has useful flexibility for shipping. However, the shipping charges are a blanket pattern that applies to all items to be sold within a web site. There will always be items where the shipping will be a price that needs to be individual. Also, you can only charge one of a few patterns for shipping (subtotal, weight, or quanity) that will be global for all items.
I feel this is a great product and very useful for my clients. However, since shipping could be a very delicate subject, suggestions such as this should be highly considered.
I just wanted to also say that the quote in my original message was taken from someone elses post, as I felt he covered what I was feeling very well. Yes, your right, weight can be set up for individual items (I think for all applets) but to have a shipping parameter to cover all patterns (or types) of shipping would be most flexible.
I'm not exactly sure what your forth sentence means, but that's ok.

Thanks for dialoging with me,
David Levy

Just one more additional statement on this. I was just at Amazon.com to get some idea of how they do their shipping. Seems that they do a good amount of their shipping by category. For instance, shipping charge for CD's would be $.99,
Books - $1.25. Now there's an idea to incorporate in uShop. The point is, to incorporate shipping prices by category, and not necessarily by item, is still a nice bit of flexibility.

Thanks again,

I just figured out how to do shipping by item.

Just use the weight paramater, just use it as a shipping code ie:

weight code 1 = $2.00
weight code 2= $5/00
weight code 3= $10.00

then decide how much for each item and then assign the weight accordingly. I have had a hard time with this for a long time and this method works great for me.

But what happens when you start adding them up? ie when multiple items are ordered. Does it work then?

I don't like 'workarounds' much, personally. Why not add a field in the item entry to specify shipping cost? If we leave it out, then do as normal, by weight or whatever. If we specify in the applet "shipprice=$3" then use that! This can't be that hard... You've had a long time to work on these upgrades since these applets were released! Do some upgrades!!!

Randy,

Unfortunately we don't have the resources to implement every requested feature. We have had hundreds of requests just for different shipping options alone. We have tried to program the shipping options to be as flexible as possible to cover as many different shipping methods as we can.

Do you have a license? You may want to submit a customization request to incorporate your needs.

Not to sound snippy, but I've had this program for darn near a year and not one update. Not one upgrade. Not one suggested feature has been implimented.

This ONE shipping feature (being able to specify a shipping cost in the item's parameters) is really needed!

The problem with the workaround is this: YES, weight really does solve the problem. Make $1=1 lb, and adjust the weight for each item to cover the appropriate shipping cost. The problem!? I needed to create a weight/shipping table covering every price from $1-1lb to $1000-1000lb and it's HUGE and slows the applet down considerably.

Add to that the fact that now the weight shown to the customer is really skewed and confusing!

I'm not meaning to complain (well), but this really should be addressed and made a priority.

Randy,

Like I said, your feature does not solve everyone elses needs. Their feature does not solve your needs. We are inundated with requests. We implement improvements on a continual basis, we make the upgrades available for free. We just released a dot upgrade (for free). Unfortunately for you, it didn't have the feature that you wanted. We support the product for free. We are working on version three now which has many improvements over version two. What software company offers free upgrades, free support?

If you need a customization of the code, have you requested one?

It's a matter of perspective I suppose. I think we offer a quality product at a good price and support it well, you don't.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

I guess I bought right about July of 99. In the past 10 months, you haven't added anything except a fix for a bug that _I_ brought to your attention. That's all I wanted to say.
