NT Order Problems
Author robduff on 04-21-2000 at 11:16 (EST)
I had my NT Host set the permissions on my order directory to write and execute, but now I get the following error:
Unable to read F:/InetPub/hotzingers/cgi-bin/orders/U927689507

The order exists, but uShop cannot read it and the user gets to see this error. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Usually the problem can be solved with one of the suggestions at:

http://www.uburst.com/uShop/reference/troubleshooting.html#CGI6

But since you mention that the order files are being written...just not read, then here are a couple of things to try:

1) Give the "orders" directory READ permission also...and see if it corrects the problem. If it does, great! But be aware of the security note at:

http://www.uburst.com/uShop/reference/security.html#SECURITY35

That is, it is very important that regular website visitors cannot view the contents of your "orders" directory. If they can, then ask your Web Hosting provider to make that directory "not viewable" by regular website visitors. They should know how to do that.

2) If giving that "orders" directory "READ" permission still does not correct the problem, then it may be that the server isn't letting the script read from that directory because it is a sub-directory of the cgi-bin. (I have seen this on some NT servers...don't know why). Anyway, you might have to move the "orders" directory from being a sub-directory of the cgi-bin...and just make it another directory on the same level as your other web pages. But again, be aware of the security note at:

http://www.uburst.com/uShop/reference/security.html#SECURITY35

Hey Bill!

Hope all is well. I solved the problem by having uShop submit the orders to an Active Server Page(ASP) which then processed the order and placed it in a database out of view of prying eyes. I then enhanced the ASP code to allow me to read and/or delete the orders in the database. First cut of the ASP code seems to be working very well and very securely.

Thanks for the help though. It did answer my question, which was I needed a secure way of storing my orders. I have a good web host, but they set up their NT servers in such a way as to make it very hard to keep uShop orders secure.

Take care.

Sincerely,
Robert Duff, President
