Affiliate Referral Question ...
Author Alex on 11-03-2000 at 16:43 (EST)
What happens if a customer clicks-through Affiliate A's link and then 2 day's later clicks Affiliate B's link and makes a purchase. Who would get the credit for the sale?

Does the new cookie overide the first one?

Yes, the new cookie will override the previous cookie.

On the referral cookies...is there a way to make them expire longer than 7 days?
like, say 6 months?
For our product, this would be appropriate.

There is not an easily configurable way at this time to increase the referral cookie expiration time, but here are some steps to make a simple modification to the code:

STEP 1: Back up your current "ushop-lib.pl" file...just in case.

STEP 2: Open your "ushop-lib.pl" file with any text editor such as WordPad.

STEP 3: Do a search on "sub affiliate_redirect" ... this will get you to the start of the subroutine that handles setting affiliate cookies.

STEP 4: About 11 lines into that "affiliate_redirect" subroutine, you will see the following line:

$time_to_expire = time + 604800; # Expire in one week.

That 604800 is the number of seconds (approximately) in which the affiliate cookie will expire. (There are approximately 604800 seconds in a week).

STEP 5: Adjust that above line accordingly. For example, if you wanted the cookie to expire in 6 months, then change that line to:

$time_to_expire = time + 14515200; # Expire in six months.

STEP 6: Save the file (as TEXT if your editor asks).

STEP 7: Try it out!
