answer sheet
Author richard on 09-19-2002 at 14:23 (EST)
i'm having a problem

i have created a test using utest. the applet i am using is the multiple-choice applet (i believe it is applet5), along with answer sheet applet 2.

the problem i'm having is i cannot view an answer sheet. every time i click on the "view answer" button on the completed test page, i get a message that the file is not found. i have check the documentation, reference & troubleshooting guides, but to no avail. i have tried this several times and several different ways, but every time i click the button, the applet apparantly starts to work, then i get pulled to a res. file on my c: drive.

if need be, i can give you the codeing i am using.

please help!!!

thanks,
rich

Here are some things to check:

1) Do you have the "answer_sheet_template.html" located in your "classes" directory?

2) Are you using the recommmended directory structure as described on the following page?

http://www.uburst.com/uTest/codebase.html

3) Have you tried the demo that was included in the uTest .zip/.exe file? (located in the "demo" directory that was created when you installed/unzipped uTest). Did the demo work from your computer?

4) What browser are you using?

5) What is the exact error message that you are seeing?

here are the answers:

1) Do you have the "answer_sheet_template.html" located in your "classes" directory?
yes, i do, i've also created new answer sheets for the specific test that i'm working on. (i will be using several different tests, do i need the same answer sheet for each?)

2) Are you using the recommmended directory structure as described on the following page?

http://www.uburst.com/uTest/codebase.html
yes, with one exception. i have put the tests themselves into subject-specific folders. and then edited the ../../codbase= string to reflect this. i will post the acutual code in my next post. the test sheet does find the classes directory, so i'm assuming that i made the correct changes. my answer sheet templates are also in the codebase section.

3) Have you tried the demo that
was included in the uTest .zip/.exe file? (located in the "demo" directory that was created when you installed/unzipped uTest). Did the demo work from your computer?

don't rember, i'll re-try the demo tomorrow and post a reply.

4) What browser are you using?
ie (i believe it is 4.0, installed with windows 2k, i just upgraded my system to xp & will re-try tomorrow).

5) What is the exact error message that you are seeing?
no on screen error message, it simply pulls up the c:/windows/res/..(something) page that tells you the browser is unable to loacte the page & to try to detect network settings. this system has no internet access, so i'm not sure if this is factoring into the problem at all. there is a message that appears on the bottom left of the browser window next to the explorer icon, but it flashes by so fast i can neither read it nor write it down.

please help, and thanks for your assistance so far.
richard

Since you are not using the recommended/default codebase setting of:

CODEBASE="../classes/"

Then you'll need to make the changes described in Section 3 at:

http://www.uburst.com/uTest/codebase.html

Question #1. So you tried the demo directly from the utest.zip file, and were experiencing a problem? What was the exact problem there?

Question #2. Have you tried the online demo at:

http://www.uburst.com/uTest/demo/seinfeld.html

Did that work for you with your browser?

Question #3. Have you tried your pages online? Did your pages work for you online?

Question #4. Can you put your pages online so that I can see the problem you are having for myself?

i think i fixed it, had 2 problems:

1) java is not installed with windows xp, and the java i was using was an old version. =P

2) fixed the directory structure, and kept everything to the old dos filename sytem, worked like a charm!

thanks for everything,
rich

- i'm going to go die of embarrasment now.......

I too am having problems with getting the test answer button to work. It works fine on my PC and on the server version (same files, just posted to a local network). When I have several of my employees try it, half can get the answer sheet to appear, and half cannot. The error message is
"The page cannot be displayed" "The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings." At the bottom of the error message it says "Cannot find server or DNS error"
(We all have access to the same server, all have the same computer model [recent Dell Optiplex running Win 2000], all running MS Internet Explorer 6. )
Any clues?
