Problem with 'Send Order' Button
Author Robert Engle on 06-04-2000 at 17:29 (EST)
I am using the uShopOrderCGI.class applet for taking orders. Everything works just fine except for one thing. When the 'Send' button is clicked a warning window shows up stating "You are about to leave a secure ..... do you want to continue?"

I have the URL parameter set with https

If NO is selected in response then nothing happens and if the button is clicked again, the order processes fine, in a secure manner with no glitches. If YES is clicked then it states that the page cannot be found. If refresh is clicked, then the order processes fine in a secure manner.

I have my site on ATT's Small Business server. They use a cgi-local directory rather than cgi-bin. if i create a cgi-bin directory and place the script in there, then it merely displays the script instead of executing it.

Also, to fully utilize the secure features of the ATT server orders must be written to a directory named .securedata which is automatically created by ATT. The .securedata directory is under the main directory, not inside the cgi-local. I have tried creating an 'orders' directory within the cgi-local, cgi-bin, and worked with the .securedata directory. Orders are written to any of the choices I set the script for, but in all cases I still get the warning when first clicking the 'send order' button on the uShopOrderCGI.class applet.

As you can imagine, this severely impacts the trust of my customers and has made a large difference in the number of orders I recieve. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Robert

Do you successfully get the "uShop Copyright" page when you go to the secure URL of the script? ...You should get something similar to when you go to the secure URL of the script on our site:

https://www.uburst.com/cgi-bin/ushop_cgiscript.pl

Let me know the results and we can determine where to go from there. Otherwise, just give me the URL and I will take a look at it.

I do get the uShop Copyright page when going to the secure URL of the script. My site is at http://www.bodhipines.com

If you want to test the 'send order' button just note in the comments section that it isn't a real order and I will disregard it. No need to input any sensitive data, there is an option for check or money order.

the secure url for the script is: https://secure.attsbh.com/bodhipines/cgi-local/ushop_cgiscript.cgi

(we must use the att secure url because we share the certificate.)

Thank you so much for your quick reply and further assistance.

Robert

I just went to your site and noticed that you have the whole store...even the product pages....being accessed through the secure server - which is ok, just a little slow.

Anyway, I spent a little time browsing your store and then placing a couple test orders (one with Netscape and one with IE....you should have received the email order notifications), but I could not see where you are getting the "leaving secure server" message. Did you already correct the problem? Otherwise, when exactly do you get the "leaving secure server" message?

It is good to hear that you did not get the 'warning' window. I checked the site myself, and once again recieved the message that 'You are about to leave a secure internet connection, it will be possible for others to view ..... Do you wish to continue?" immediately upon clicking the 'Send' button. Still, by replying 'no' nothing happens, then clicking the 'send' button a second time the order processes without a glitch. Just in case it was my browser, I updated my IE even though the same thing occurs when using my other machine.

The reason for all the files being in inside the secure area is that I have been trying many things to rectify the problem with no luck.

Perhaps this 'warning' window is supposed to pop up when clicking 'send order'? If so, it is definately confusing making the user believe that the the sensitive information on the order form would be viewable by others.

Again, thanks for replying so quickly, any other suggestions?

Robert

No. No warning window is supposed to pop-up when you press "Send order". In fact, the "thank you" page that is generated after you press "Send Order" is just standard HTML....very similar to the copyright page when you visit your site at:

https://secure.attsbh.com/bodhipines/cgi-local/ushop_cgiscript.cgi

That is, there are no links to anything off the secure server...so you should not get any warnings that you are "leaving the secure server".

Again, when I visited your site and placed a test order, everything appeared to work fine. I did not receive any "leaving the secure server" messages....So I do not know why you are receiving that message.

Hello again!

Just wanted to tell you that I finally got it working so that the popup window warning that information would be viewable to others no longer rears its ugly head. I changed the 'Return_URL' parameter in the Order Applet from http://www.bodhipines.com to https://[our_secure_server]/[main_page.html

From reading all the other posts it seems I wasn't the only one with a such a problem, maybe this will help!

Thank you so much for your help.

Robert

Good info!

I have seen such a warning message when a secure page is loading something like an image from a public server....but not by just having a hyper-link to a public URL. I wonder if there is some setting on some browsers to warn of such links or not.....explaining why some browsers got the warning and some didn't.

Anyway, good info about changing that return_url parameter.
