3.0 and Opera Browser
Author ronharter on 08-26-2000 at 13:30 (EST)
I downloaded the newest version of the Opera Browser 4.02 with the JRE 1.3 plug-in and tried it out on our cart. It works on ushop 2.0, (sort of, if you click on the secure order button in the left frame, it opens the view page in the left
frame. This doesn't happen in Netscape or IE).

On 3.0 I had all kinds of problems. It will not load a script button into the cart but it does load an applet. But when you go to place the order and view the cart it just hangs at the "Please wait" message.

I don't know how many people actually use this browser since you have to pay $40 for it after 30-days but I am sure I will get emails about it.

The new 3.0 cart is at http://www.excess-solutions.com/new/ the Resistor
page has both Applet and Script buttons on it.

Please let me know if you have any information on this so I can let my
customers know if it will work or not.

Thanks
Ron Harter

I'm not really that familiar with Opera yet (although I've heard good things about it), but from what you describe it sounds like it has limited JavaScript support. I'll look into it.

Just FYI: Here are a couple links to where you can see some stats on what browsers are being used:

Thanks, we have Web Trends on the site and it gives a pretty good list of Browsers used to access the site. Unforunately the user can set the way he wants Opera to be Identified. The default is Netscape.

One of the selling points of Opera is that it is only 1.5mB in size. If you want Java it is a plug-in that you download from the Sun Java Site. I found out that you can turn on Java error messages and when I did and pressed the Script add button I got the following message:

Cannot convert undefined or null to object

This means nothing to me but I thought it might help you figure it out.

Thanks again

I went to the Opera website and they do appear to support JavaScripts... So I went ahead and downloaded Opera 4.02 with Java.

When trying it out, it appears that the Java Applets work Ok....and it also appears that JavaScripts work Ok too... the problem, however, seems to be in the communication between Java Applets and JavaScripts. We'll look into it some more.
