"garbled text/answers"
Posted by Matt Taylor on May-30-03 at 10:39 AM (EST)
Hi, I was viewing the demos on the uTest website and sometimes when scrolling down the text for the questions and/or answers would become garbled-basically with letters missing or text ontop of other text. I am using Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 2000. This happened multiple times and on at least a couple of the demos.

Any info or help with the issue would be appreciated.

From our experience working with Java Applets, we have occasionally seen this problem too. It only occurs on some computers and seems to be related to the video card/memory utilization... but other factors such as browser and JVM version seem to also affect the refresh ability. The problem can minimized by reducing the number of Java Applets placed on a single HTML page.

Thanks for the information. Could you please provide more details if possible because both of the computers in the office I work at that I tested it on have the issue and if that is the case most likely many of our clients will have similar problems. On our computers it is almost impossible to scroll at all without having some of the text get distorted. I will try placing less Java applets on a page (right now I have 10), but I really don't want to have to split it up beyond two pages if possible.

You may also be able to reduce any such distortion that your computer is having by NOT putting the applets in HTML tables - or if using HTML tables - being sure that the WIDTH and HEIGHT is specifically set to a value (not a percent) on EVERY table CELL (< TD >) that has an applet in it.

As for why some computers have a problem with Applet distortion (and let me note that this not specific to uTest applets), we are not sure. Again, it seems to be related to the video card/memory utilization... but other factors such as browser and JVM version seem to also affect the refresh ability. I don't think I've ever heard of any reports with Applet distortion on Netscape browsers... and since the release of IE 6, the reports of distortion on IE browsers have become quite rare also. Additionally, the JVM being used could be a factor, so downloading the latest Java Plugin from Sun may help.
