"MAC Explorer 4.5 & 5.0 Table Problem"
Posted by Bob Ericksen on Aug-06-01 at 10:10 AM (EST)
Browsers: MAC Explorer 4.5, 5.0 and Netscape 4.08

I like what I see using your trial version EXCEPT for:

When using MAC Explorer 4.5 or 5.0, everything appears normal until Update Quantities is executed.

Shopping cart table breaks with update i.e., an extra blank item row shows up directly below the updated item row.

If original item is then updated to zero quantity, original (valid) row and the extra blank row go away.

This problem shows up with my trial version on my server as well as showing up on your site plus some of your customer sites.

This problem does not show up under MAC Netscape 4.08.

Suspect a HTML syntax problem on your part. Are you aware of this problem?

If you have a work around or a patch, I would be interested. Please let me know.

That actually is a known bug (SR1977548) relating to the Macintosh browser inserting an extra carriage return on that quantity entry box. A work around was released on 3/16/2001:

---------------------------------------
STEP 1: Make a backup of your current ustorekeeper.pl file... just in case.

STEP 2: Open your "ustorekeeper.pl" file with any text editor such as WordPad.

STEP 3: Do a search on the following line:

$new_quantity = $form_text{$quantity_field};

STEP 4: Immediately AFTER that line, add the following line:

$new_quantity =~ &strip_letters($new_quantity);

STEP 5: Save the file (as TEXT if your editor asks)... and try it out!
---------------------------------------

Additionally, we went ahead and posted an minor update to the script which fixes this problem-

Double-check that you installed the updated version of the script by looking ON YOUR SERVER and verifying that your ustorekeeper.pl script says version 1.82 and/or that it has the line:

$new_quantity =~ &strip_letters($new_quantity);

.... in it.

Also double-check that your browser is not just displaying an old cached version of the page.

And finally, try the same tests on our online demos and see if you get the same results there:

Confirm, browser cache empty.

Confirm, script on the server is 1.82 and has line
$new_quantity =~ &strip_letters($new_quantity);

Problem still shows up on the online demos and
your actual order script using MAC Explorer 4.5
and MAC Explorer 5.

Problem does not show up on Windows Explorer or MAC Netscape.

We're pretty confident in that solution as we spent quite a bit of time resolving it with another Macintosh user back in March. In fact, here is the exact URL/script that we were using as a test script at that time:

http://www.uburst.com/cgi-bin/ustorekeeper/ustorekeeper_test.pl

Go ahead and try out that test URL and see if you get still get the problem there.

This will verify that the aforementioned "$new_quantity =~ &strip_letters($new_quantity);" line was indeed the only mod that needs to be made.

Arrgh. My mistake. I meant for that line to be:

$new_quantity = &strip_letters($new_quantity);

NOT:

$new_quantity =~ &strip_letters($new_quantity);

So the instructions should be:

---------------------------------------
STEP 1: Make a backup of your current ustorekeeper.pl file... just in case.

STEP 2: Open your "ustorekeeper.pl" file with any text editor such as WordPad.

STEP 3: Do a search on the following line:

$new_quantity = $form_text{$quantity_field};

STEP 4: Immediately AFTER that line, add the following line:

$new_quantity = &strip_letters($new_quantity);

STEP 5: Save the file (as TEXT if your editor asks)... and try it out!
---------------------------------------
