"See merch. total when choosing shipping method?"
Posted by Katherine on Feb-24-03 at 05:09 PM (EST)
My users complain that they can't see the cost of choosing different shipping methods in order_template.

Our shipping charge is based on merchandise total, so I could display the shipping charges table in order_template if I could also show their merchandise total at that point.

Can you help? Thanks!

The shipping total will not be shown during the order process until the review order page is shown.

Since you have set up a shipping table to calculate the shipping cost based on the merchandise total and shipping method - you could always have that shipping table information posted on your website (or even displayed at the top of your order form template, for example) such that the customer will see for themselves what the cost will be in advance of seeing the final review order page (which will show the calculated shipping cost).

For example, couldn't you show something like this on your website or on the order template:

Standard Shipping
$1-$50...... $5.00
$50-$100... $7.00
$100+... $10.00

Overnight Shipping
$1-$50...... $15.00
$50-$100... $24.00
$100+... $30.00

Additionally, when the customer sees the shipping cost on the review order page, they still have the option of clicking the Back button on their browser and then choosing a different shipping method.

Yeah, I do have the shipping table on the site in several places but they manage to get to the point of choosing a shipping method either (a) not having viewed the shipping table or (b) not noticing what their total is at this point. So I thought if I could show them the shipping table AND their merch. total when they're choosing the shipping method, this would solve the problem.

I tried using uShopCart1 to re-display the cart on the order review page, but can't get this working, it always says my cart is empty. Should this work? If yes, I'll continue on this track.

Thanks for your help. Excellent product and excellent support.

Here is something you could try... a slight modification to the script such that you can show the subtotal where ever you want on the order_template.html file.

STEP 1: On your "order_template.html" file, add a new tag called "TAG_ORDER_SUBTOTAL". For example, in the shipping area of the order_template.html file, add:

Order Subtotal: TAG_ORDER_SUBTOTAL

(The TAG_ORDER_SUBTOTAL will be replaced during runtime with the actual subtotal.)

STEP 2: Make a backup of your current ushop-lib.pl script... just in case.

STEP 3: Open your ushop-lib.pl script with any text editor such as WordPad.

STEP 4: Do a search on the following line:

local ($src_string) = @_;

STEP 5: Immediately AFTER that line, add the following line:

$src_string =~ s/TAG_ORDER_SUBTOTAL/$totals_subtotal2/i;

STEP 6: Do a second search on the following line:

local ($src_string) = @_;

STEP 7: Immediately AFTER that line, you will see the following line:

local ($t1,$t2);

STEP 8: Immediately AFTER that "local ($t1,$t2);" line, add the following line again:

$src_string =~ s/TAG_ORDER_SUBTOTAL/$totals_subtotal2/i;

STEP 9: Save the script... as text if your editor asks... and try it out!

(When trying it out, remember to put the modified "order_template.html" file on your server too.)

This works *perfectly* with one small defugalty:

If the merchandise subtotal has no cents (e.g. $5.00) only 1 digit of cents is displayed ($5.0).

Do you have a fix for this?

As usual, thanks to you & your team for addressing these "little" wishes we users have.

Katherine

5 . "Formatting The Subtotal"

What you will need to do is change the newly added line:

$src_string =~ s/TAG_ORDER_SUBTOTAL/$totals_subtotal2/i;

Change BOTH occurances of that line to these two lines:

$formatted_subtotal = sprintf("%.2f",$totals_subtotal2);
$src_string =~ s/TAG_ORDER_SUBTOTAL/$formatted_subtotal/i;

And that should do it!
