"How to flag specific items to be exempt from shipping&handling charges"

This question was discussed in an e-mail to Microburst support, but we are going to post it in the forum for anyone else looking for a similar solution...

===============================================
Among other items in his store, a uShop customer was selling downloadable software online, and the shipping and handling charges did not apply. He needed certain items to be exempt from shipping and handling charges, so this is what he did:

In his store example, he selected the standard
shipping calculation of weight formula, and a flat handling fee of $1.00.

With this setup, he could flag items as having no shipping charge, by simply specifying a weight of 0.0. But this still left the flat handling fee of $1.00 that was specified in the store general setup.

So he created a new shipping method, for example, called "Online Downloading". He then made this shipping method a flat fee, and specified the amount as "-$1.00" to offset the flat handling fee of $1.00, irrelevant of the quantity of items in the order.

The only downside to this solution is that the customer needs to correctly select the
"Online Downloading" shipping option.

An auto executing JavaScript on order template #2 could check the shipping method and alert the user to go back and select the proper method.

Idealy the check would be done on submiting order template #1. However, the submit button is generated by uShop.pl.

A seperate "validate" button could be used. Not very elegant.

OR the uShop_form_write?? function modified to direct the submit (continue) button to call a validateForm script that would submit the form after doing validation.

I am finding a need to have more and more of my "submit" buttons to perform other functions before doing a "form.submit()".

Since the uShop button is a plain 'submit' it could be made part of the template form and the developer modify it as needed.
