Posted by heather on Mar-15-01 at 10:27 AM (EST)
Hello, The first order we got upon cart launch was charged tax, but was *not* shipping to FL. Why? Please tell me how do I fix the tax settings?

Here's a URL to a page:
http://www.smmonline.com/c_moveins.htm

Tax Settings

Default Tax Rate: 0.0%
Tax Table (States): THIS IS BLANK
Tax Table (Countries): THIS IS BLANK
Tax Menu Rates: 6.0%,6.5%,6.75%,7.0%,7.5%
Tax Menu Table: FL
Tax Shipping Charge: Yes
Base Tax On: Shipping Address

Thanks so much for your response!

This is just a clarification... "NO" tax should be charged unless it is shipped to Florida. If it is a FL order, then I need to use a table as defined below. So, how would I fix the tax settings? It is taxing 6% for everything. I am using the very latest version for 2 licenses.

When using the Tax Menu, the first value listed in the "Tax Menu Rates" is considered to be the default value. So try changing your setting to:

Tax Menu Rates: 0.0%,6.0%,6.5%,6.75%,7.0%,7.5%

Thanks for your suggestion. *How* can I put in the word "select" ?

(I'm asking before the client asks. Most likely they won't want FL customers to have the option of 0.0%)

Here's where I'm confused...

According to the user guide (below), the default tax rate of 0.0% should apply to all states *except* FL. If the drop down field value = FL, *then* the table is applied. I could swear this worked properly before I upgraded to this version last week:
http://www.uburst.com/uShop/updates.html

***excerpt from user guide***
This parameter allows you to specify specific states and/or countries that don't go by the default tax rate. Typically this parameter would be used by in correlation with a Tax Menu Rates parameter described above.

As an example, suppose you want to charge a default tax rate of "0.0%" for everyone except for customers from Florida. To do this, you would set the "Default Tax Rate" (see above) to "0.0%" and you would set this "Tax Menu Table" parameter to "FL,FLORIDA". On your order form, you could put a note that "Customers from Florida must select the tax rate for their area." This "Tax Menu Table" parameter would then make sure that customers from "FL" or "FLORIDA" select a tax rate other than the "Default Tax Rate".

5 . "0.0% didn't work"
Posted by Heather on Mar-15-01 at 02:10 PM (EST)
Hi;

Until I resolve my issue I plugged in 0.0% as suggested for a temporary solution to help w/onslaught. Unfortunately the drop down box skips over the 0.0% and displays 6.0% first. I suppose it recognizes 0.0% as the default.

Please help :(
Thans.

You can see that those are the same settings on our demo at:

http://www.uburst.com/uShop/demos.html

So double-check your "Tax Settings" by comparing them to the setting on that demo ... and that should give you what you're looking for.

(FYI: In regard to your comment about "skipping over 0% and displaying 6.0% first".... That may be from placing a previous order with 6.0% selected. Clear your browser's cookies file and/or place a new order with 0% selected. The first item in the tax menu will be displayed first unless the customer selected a different tax rate during a previous order.)

7 . "0.0% didn't work"

But why does the 0.0% have to be there at all? This table is supposed to apply to all FL orders. The default tax rate should apply to all other states.

One difference that I see between the demo and mine, is that I'm not using FL,FLORIDA. I need to use a drop down box so this is *exact* to avoid typos. The options only contain 2-letter states so I only put FL.

Is there *any* way I can change 0.0% in the tax table to read "NOT IN FLORIDA"?

No, you don't need to have the ",FLORIDA" if you are using drop-down state list.

Yes, you may specify the first item in your tax menu as "NOT IN FLORIDA"... because that will get interpretted as 0.0%.

If you are just going to be charging everyone in FL the same 6.0% rate, however, then you don't need to have a drop down menu at all. Instead, try setting your Tax fields to:

Default Tax Rate: 0.0%
Tax Table (States): FL=6.0%
Tax Table (Countries):
Tax Menu Rates:
Tax Menu Table:
Tax Shipping Charge: Yes
Base Tax On: Shipping Address

(Leave the Tax Table (Countries), Tax Menu Rates, and Tax Menu Table blank).

This will cause all FL customers to be charged 6.0% tax and everyone else 0.0% tax.
