"Order number repeats!"
Posted by Philip Ly on Feb-09-00 at 02:36 AM (EST)
How are the order numbers being generated by the cgi script?

We somehow got a new order notification that is from an order we processed 4 months ago. Subsequently we sent out the order and find out the customer have already received and have been charged for the order 4 months ago.

We compared the information from the order receipt we printed out 4 months ago with the supposedly "new" order receipt and everything was identical, even comments given by the customer.
However, under the cgibin/orders directory the time stamp for the order is of a newer date!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Philip Ly

Philip,

That's a new one on me. I don't have a clue. I'm going to forward your question to the developer to see if he has any ideas.

Philip

The customer probably bookmarked the thankyou page the first time he placed
the order. By doing this, the customer basically stored the entire GET
command line that is used to pass data to the CGI script. This standard GET
transfer method uses the URL to send data.....so the bookmarked URL would
have all of the information from the original order....essentially placing
the order again.

Hope this helps,

Charlie,

How can I prevent the "dup order" from happening?
You were right, the customer did bookmark the order receipt page. He did it so that he could go back and refer to it at a later time. Many customer will naturally want to do this.
This of course, generated another order alert for us.
How can I prevent myself from shipping this order again as a result of this?

Thanks

Philip

If you are finding this to be a common problem, you may just want to make your own "Thank You" page and link customers to that page by setting the "thankyou_url" parameter to point to any URL that you want.... perhaps saying "Thank you for placing your order. You will be receiving a receipt via email." ....Or something to that extent...

Otherwise, we will be looking into eliminating the possibility of that happening in a future release.
