"netscape displays okay IE5 sits and spins"
Posted by webgeek on Apr-21-00 at 06:48 PM (EST)
url for order page: http://www.webgeekdesign.com/sc2/test.html

Secure order form:
https://webgeek2.virtualis.com/speakerc/order.template

placing orders is fine, when I hit "Check Out" the applet appears to "sit and spin" in IE5
but in netscape, everything displays as normal.

How do I fix this?

I can't get to your page at:

http://www.webgeekdesign.com/sc2/test.html

But, check the solution discussed in the following Support Forum Entry:

Try changing the codebase on your secure order page from:

codebase="https://webgeek2.virtualis.com/speakerc/class/"

to

codebase="http://www.webgeekdesign.com/sc2/class/"

And see if it corrects the problem.

If not, you may just have to take the shopping cart applet off of your secure order page.

Transactions will still be secure providing that you use the secure url (beginning with https) of the ushop_cgiscript.pl for the "scriptpath" parameter of your uShopOrderCGI applet and your uShopOrderReaderCGI applet.

I have a similar problem as Webgeek. I am using a shared certificate and I am using the secure url for all of my applets to avoid the security warnings. When I do repetive orders on IE the shopping cart and order applets don't reload. Sometimes it will work for two or three consecutive times and then fail.

Al,

I don't think you're having the same problem. Your setup works the first time but if you immediately reenter after that, then if fails, is this correct?

If so, this is a problem with the way IE caches the applets. You might try forcing the browser to refresh the cache by a meta tag command.

I have added a no-cache statement to the header of my order template and my contents page. The html file does not appear to be cached, but the applet continues to run in memory. When I check the threads in my java console it looks like the shopping cart and order applets are running multiple times. I have pasted in the text from the java console.

I currently have 2 stores setup using ushop and both have the same behavior.

http://www.wharf7.com/ushop/wanda_main.html This store has several different sets of products, but they are all setup the same way. I have not made the no-cache changes to this site

http://www.sportsmensgifts.com/laurieswreaths/wreath_main.html I have made cache changes to wreath_contents.html and my order template. I am not sure if my syntax is correct or not though.

FWIW I am seeing the same defect in your page also. Curiously if I hit ALT-TAB, the ALT-TAB back to IE again the applet displays correctly. It doesn't seem to handle scrolling though.

John, you are seeing an entirely unrelated problem. In regard to the scrolling break-up that you mention that you are seeing with your IE browser....Over the years, I too have seen such problem with the way IE appears to handle repainting such large applets on some computers. Most computers, however, handle the repainting the applet fine...so it leads me to believe it is related to some video cards.

could be. I REALLY hope you are right because I was all stoked to use ushop.

I wonder how many people have problems like this, however.

Well regarding it being the video card ....

I tried your stuff on another machine and it did the same thing. The machine has a different video card, ancient Oak vs a Sis 5597. It's up to YOU to fix it, even though I didn't see these problems with IE4 (meaning the Evil Empire made some change). You can't expect visitors to only use certain video cards - there's already loss from those who don't have JavaScript turned on (or so I hear).

If you are referring to IE hanging up when you go to the order page, that can be fixed. See the following forum post for a description about setting the CODEBASE of the applets on your secure order page:

http://www.uburst.com/dcforum/ushop_applets_shopcart/29.html#3

Also, see the following instructions about setting up the uShopOrderButtonCGI applet described at:

http://www.uburst.com/uShop/reference/security.html#SECURITY5

(In particular, note the January 19th Note).

Otherwise, give me the URL and I will take a look at it.

I sent these URLs in a couple of months ago and still have no response. Maybe they got lost in the shuffle. I am still having the problem with applets not loading for second order. I am using the secure path as codebase for all of my applets so the browser should always be looking in the right place.

I just took a look at both of your sites and tested each one out by using both Netscape 4.72 and IE 5.0 from my Windows 98 computer. Both browsers worked fine on both sites, so are you still seeing a problem?

I did go ahead and took a look at your directory structure and codebase settings, and observed that you do follow the major rules of keeping the codebase exactly the same for all of your applets -- and NOT switching the codebase from a public server to a secure server when you transfer to your secure order page. So it really should be working for you.

If it isn't however, here is the recommended changes that I would make to your sites:

-----
SITE 1: http://www.wharf7.com/ushop/wanda_main.html
-----

Step 1) Change the codebase of ALL of your applets on your regular store pages from:

codebase="https://ssl-002.9netave.com/~ux430168/forms/classes/"

to

codebase="../forms/classes/"

Step 2) Leave the codebase of the two applets on your secure order page set to:

codebase="https://ssl-002.9netave.com/~ux430168/forms/classes/"

Step 3) - OPTIONAL - Only if your site is still not working after the above two steps, you can also try changing the codebase of the two applets on your secure order pages to:

http://www.wharf7.com/forms/classes/

-----
SITE 2: http://www.sportsmensgifts.com/laurieswreaths/wreath_main.html
-----

Step 1) Change the codebase of ALL of your applets on your regular store pages from:

codebase="https://ssl-002.9netave.com/~ux502051/ushop/"

to

codebase="../ushop/"

Step 2) Leave the codebase of the two applets on your secure order page set to:

codebase="https://ssl-002.9netave.com/~ux502051/ushop/"

Step 3) - OPTIONAL - Only if your site is still not working after the above two steps, you can also try changing the codebase of the two applets on your secure order pages to:

http://www.sportsmensgifts.com/ushop/

-----

So these changes would basically use a relative codebase for the applets on your public store pages, but still use the full url for the applets on your secure order pages.

20 . "Better, but still locks up occasionally"
Posted by Al on Sep-04-00 at 07:25 AM (EST)
Bill,

I have made all of your suggested changes to both sites. The wharf7 has since gone out of business so the problems there no longer matter.

I am now sometimes able to make 3 or 4 consecutive orders on the sportsmensgifts site using IE 5.5 before I encounter a problem. The first time always works. After that the occurrence of the problem appears to be random. There also appear to be two different resulting problems. Most of the time the applets appear as gray boxes, but the browser is still functioning and allows you to navigate to other pages. Sometimes the browser locks up and you need to kill the process or reboot the computer.

If you wish to test this you will need to actually submit several orders. The credit card number check is turned off so it will accept any bogus info you wish to enter. Just add some comment about testing in the comments box so the owner will recognize it as a test order.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? It seems odd that I would get exactly the same behavior on two different sites. Both sites are hosted on the same server, but other than that they are completely separate.

I really like the ushop product because of its low cost and ease of use. I have several other sites where I could use it if we can get to the bottom of this problem.

P.S. Sorry about the delay in responding. I have been off on other projects and just now have found time to get back to this issue.

I just went to your site at:

http://www.sportsmensgifts.com/laurieswreaths/wreath_main.html

And placed a few test orders (5 orders using IE 5.0 and 3 orders using Netscape 4.72).... and all seemed to work ok.

If you do still see the applets on the secure order form page locking up occasionally - but not on a consistent basis - then it sounds like a threading issue.

I would suggest:

1) First making sure that you are using a version of uShop released on February 17th or later:

http://www.uburst.com/uShop/updates.html

(that 2/17/00 update was to eliminate a problem with the shopping cart and order applet locking up in netscape)

2) Or, as a less desireable solution, just try removing the shopping cart applet entirely from the order page.

Other than that, all of your code looks good so I don't see any issues there that could be causing the problem.
