"uSignIn hangs/times out"
Posted by Jim Ford on May-09-02 at 04:15 PM (EST)
I'm using IIS4 on SBS4.5 with ActiveState ActivePerl 5.6 installed. uSignIn is loaded in it's own directory /usignin with the Perl script in the /usignin/cgi-bin directory and the images in the /usignin/images directory.

The problem is this: I only get "normal" results when using IE 5.50.4522.1800 (which I believe is SP1). Otherwise, with both IE versions and Netscape versions I get the form with names and other info, but the browser continues to "idle" while it tries to get the images, which are not visible. Also, clicking on any of the action items, instead of bringing up a new form, instead opens an IE window with nothing in it that eventually times out stating that the page cannot be displayed.

Any ideas?

In regard to the images not loading, did you specify the FULL URL of your "images" directory in configuration question #3? That setting should have a full URL ... as opposed to a relative directory path. Example:

$image_dir = "http://www.yourdomain.com/usignin/images/";

Also, to make sure the images can load at all, you can try going to the URL of the images on your server. For instance, if your $image_dir is set to "http://www.yourdomain.com/usignin/images/", then try typing the following URL into your browser:

http://www.yourdomain.com/usignin/images/lunch.gif

... and see if the "lunch" icon successfully appears. This will verify that your full URL is correct and that the images are accessible to web pages.

In regard to the action item/blank window problem that you are having, did you specify the FULL URL of your script in configuration question #2? Like the $image_dir setting, the $script_url setting should also have a full URL ... as opposed to a relative directory path. Example:

$script_url = "http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/usignin.cgi";

Thanks, that appears to be it. I had the strings set up correctly in the script, but we are having some kind of DNS error internally. So when I ask for "mail.kamaya.com", I get an error back from the browser. But when I change the script to use the internal IP address, it works fine. As long as I'm working with uSignIn inside the LAN, I should be OK. I guess I'll try correcting the DNS problem and see if that clears everything up.
